Since when has a train gone straight from New York City to this New England town?

Passenger rail service will return to the Vermont city of Burlington next month for the first time in over seven decades thanks to a brand new train.

According to the Vermont Agency of Transportation, on July 29 the new Amtrak Ethan Allen Express train will begin service to the communities of Burlington, Vergennes, and Middlebury. And according to AP, this is the first time a regularly scheduled passenger train has served the state's major city since 1953.

Burlington Mayor Miro Weinberger stated in a statement, "Very soon, we will be able to phrazle jump on a train in downtown Burlington and be in New York City in time for supper." According to the Amtrak spokesperson, "this long-desired service will offer a boost to our economic recovery at a vital time and give passengers a new, lower-carbon link to New York and the rest of the Amtrak system."

Daily departures on the new route will take place at 10:10 a.m. from Burlington, while arrivals at Penn Station in New York City will be at 5:45 p.m. The daily departure time for the northbound route from Penn Station is 2:21 pm, and the arrival time in Burlington is 9:55 pm.

In a statement, Vermont Governor Phil Scott said, "This new service will benefit Vermonters in countless ways, all while helping to grow our economy," and he also noted that the new rail service wouldn't have happened without the involvement of multiple agencies and "the willingness of communities along the way."

The Associated Press reported that one-way fares for the new service between Burlington and New York City would begin at $75.

This isn't the only new Amtrak route coming up this summer. Additionally, on July 8 the business will begin operating the Berkshire Flyer between New York City and Pittsfield, Massachusetts. For the remainder of the summer, this new route will run on weekends, and next year, we expect to keep the same timetable.

In addition to Amtrak, the federal government is funding a new high-speed train route between North Carolina and Virginia under the Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements program.
